New regulations aimed at exhibitions holding at least a 20% participation of foreign attendees or exhibitors were proposed in January of this year. If and when these new rules are instituted, participants of affected shows stand to deal with the following restrictions, established by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce:
- Specific permission for events exceeding at least 2,000 square meters
- Partnership with a “domestic legal person”
- Event applications are to be filed at least 6 months prior to an event
- Names of shows and events are subject to comply with specific standards
- Advertising materials must be approved in advance by the government
- No more than two exhibitions may be held in the same sector, in the same city in a single year
- No more than four exhibitions may be held by all organizers in the same year
