With innovations, technology, and bright ideas permeating through every facet of the convention industry, it’s difficult to imagine an antiquated generation of trade shows, which, despite keeping pace with industry-wide advancements, have deep histories. It is thanks to their longevity that these events have become institutions in and of themselves within their respective industries. In The Centenarians, author Jody Shee profiles seven trade shows, the earliest dating back to 1150.
1150 Messe Frankfurt Inc. – Decorate Life: Tendence Autumn + Winter
1859 American Dental Association – Annual Session and World Marketplace Exhibition
1867 American Institute of Architects – AIA National Convention and Design Exposition
1880 Professional Photographer’s Association – Imaging USA
1893 International Association of Chiefs of Police – Annual IACP Conference Law Enforcement Education & Technology Exposition
1901 Chicago Auto Trade Association – Chicago Auto Show
1906 National Jeweler Network – The Nielson Co. JA New York Summer Show
